Crownmark Loans, a small-business funding broker in Salisbury, North Carolina, explains inventory financing for Rowan County retailers and wholesalers: funding secured by the goods you buy, typically recorded with a UCC filing. This page covers how partners value stock, floor plan arrangements, inventory financing versus factoring or a credit line, and what to prepare.

How inventory financing works
- You choose the stock to buy and get a supplier quote or invoice.
- The partner values the stock and advances part of its cost, sometimes paying the supplier directly.
- The partner records a lien on the inventory, usually with a UCC financing statement filed with the North Carolina Secretary of State.
- You repay on a schedule, or pay down each item's balance as it sells, depending on the structure.
Partners rarely advance the full purchase price. They lend against what the goods would bring if they had to be sold quickly, which is often well below retail. Fast-selling, durable goods are easier to finance than perishable, fashion or custom stock.
The UCC filing and why it matters later
A UCC financing statement is the public notice that a lender has a claim on certain property. Once filed, it can show up when another lender searches your business name. A blanket filing that covers all inventory can make a second inventory lender hesitant, so ask whether a filing will name specific goods or all assets.
Floor plans: the dealer's version of inventory money
Floor plan financing is a revolving form of inventory financing for high-value items that each carry a serial number. The lender pays the manufacturer or distributor for each unit, and when that unit sells, the dealer repays that unit's balance, often with periodic checks of what is still on the floor. It is built for dealers of serialized goods and is a narrow product; most stores and wholesalers use other structures.
Inventory financing versus factoring
| Inventory financing | Invoice factoring | Line of credit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is funded | Goods not yet sold | Invoices already issued | Any business need, by draw |
| Collateral | The stock | The receivables, sold or pledged | Receivables, a blanket lien, or none |
| Who your customer pays | You | Often the factor | You |
| Fits | Buying ahead of demand | Customers who pay net 30 or slower | Uneven, recurring gaps |
Factoring turns invoices into cash after a sale; inventory financing funds the purchase before one. Factoring sits outside what Crownmark brokers. A wholesaler that sells on terms may find a revolving line of credit covers both the buying and the waiting.
Shelves and warehouses across Rowan County, NC
Retail trade is the county's largest sector by establishment count: 431 employer establishments with 5,116 paid employees in 2023, and 187 of those stores had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Rowan County also had 138 wholesale employer establishments. Separately, 921 retail businesses in the county operated with no payroll in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024; a different program and year, so the two counts are not added).
Within ZIP 28144, the ZIP that holds much of central Salisbury, 116 retail employer establishments were counted in 2023 (ZIP Business Patterns). A small store has little room to carry stock for long, which is where inventory financing earns its place. See the Salisbury, NC page for the wider employer mix and financing by sector for how stores compare with other sectors.
How to finance inventory without overbuying
- Finance the items with a sales record, not the ones you hope will move
- Match the repayment to how long the goods usually sit before selling
- Keep a simple inventory count partners can check against the lien
- Ask how returned, damaged or obsolete stock is treated under the agreement
If the gap is really about payroll or rent rather than goods, working capital may be the cleaner fit.
What partners review
- Supplier quotes or invoices for the stock
- Recent sales history and turnover by category, if you track it
- Business bank statements
- Existing liens on inventory or business assets
- Last year's filed business return
The four steps explain what happens after you call, and the comparison table lists all six options.
