Crownmark Loans, a small-business funding broker in Salisbury, North Carolina, explains working capital financing: a short-horizon advance for operating costs, repaid through scheduled debits. Lending partners size it from bank deposits and existing obligations. This page covers uses, sizing, repayment and how it compares with a line of credit or a merchant cash advance.

Where working capital money goes in a Salisbury, NC business
Working capital is the gap between money you are owed and money you owe. A remodeler in Rowan County may pay a framing crew weekly while the homeowner pays at milestones; a store pays a distributor on delivery and sells over the next month. Working capital financing bridges that gap with a lump sum that is repaid on a schedule.
It suits expenses that recur or resolve quickly. It is a poor fit for something you will use for years, such as a building improvement or a machine, which usually belongs with a term loan or equipment financing.
Short horizon by design
Owners often ask whether working capital is short-term or long-term money. In practice partners write it on a shorter clock than a term loan, because the expense it covers turns back into cash quickly. The partner sets the actual term after reviewing the file; we do not quote one in advance.
A short term means larger individual payments for the same amount. That is why the repayment rhythm matters as much as the price.
How a partner arrives at an amount
There is no published formula, but the same inputs come up again and again: average monthly deposits in the business bank account, the pattern of those deposits, payments already going out to other lenders or funders, time in business, and the owners' credit. Some partners also look at the owners' personal income and debts together with the business, an approach explained in our post on global cash flow analysis.
Asking for a specific amount tied to a specific expense helps. A request for three payrolls and a supplier invoice reads better than a round number with no purpose.
How repayment works
- The partner deposits the funds in your business account.
- Payments are debited automatically, commonly weekly or monthly, starting soon after funding.
- Each payment covers interest or fees plus principal until the balance is gone.
- Some agreements allow early payoff with a reduced total; others do not. Ask before signing.
If a schedule of daily debits is proposed, check whether the product is really a merchant cash advance, which works differently and is not a loan.
Working capital, a credit line or an advance?
| Question | Working capital | Line of credit | Merchant cash advance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is it a loan? | Yes | Yes | No; the funder buys receipts |
| How you receive money | One lump sum | Pulled as needed, capped by the limit | One lump sum |
| How it goes back | Fixed scheduled debits | Interest on what is out, principal as cash returns | A share of receipts until the total is collected |
| Fits | A defined gap | Repeated, uneven gaps | Card-heavy sales and a need for speed |
A recurring need, such as payroll that swings with job timing, often fits a revolving line of credit better than a series of lump sums. If a merchant cash advance is on the table, read how holdbacks and factor rates work first.
Rowan County, NC expenses that fit the pattern
Small employers dominate the county: 1,545 of Rowan County's 2,908 employer establishments had fewer than five employees in 2023 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). For a business that small, one late customer payment can decide whether payroll clears.
- Specialty trade contractors (266 Rowan County employer establishments, CBP 2023) carrying labor and materials until a draw is paid
- Retailers (431 establishments) buying stock ahead of the months it sells
- Restaurants and other eating places (210 establishments) covering food costs and wages between deposits
- A sole owner adding a first employee, who needs the North Carolina payroll accounts set up first
That last case is common enough that we wrote a guide to NC withholding and employer registration. For the wider local picture, see Rowan County business figures and financing by sector.
A cushion versus a loan
Borrowing for every short gap is expensive. Our post on building a business cash reserve explains how a reserve and a credit line can share the load, so working capital financing is saved for gaps a reserve cannot cover.
When you are ready, the four steps show what happens after the first call, and the full comparison puts all six options in one table.
