How equipment financing works
It starts with a written quote for the exact machine. The partner pays the seller, and you make fixed payments over a term set around the equipment's useful life. Because the partner can repossess the asset if payments stop, the equipment carries much of the risk, and the rest rests on your business's cash flow and credit.
A down payment is often requested. Our loan cost calculator shows the monthly payment and total repaid on the financed portion.
Three contracts for one machine
| Equipment loan | Lease | Equipment finance agreement | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title while payments run | The business, subject to the lender's lien | The lessor | Your company, while the funder holds a security interest |
| At the end | Lien released | Hand back, extend or purchase, as the lease spells out | Security interest ends at the final payment |
| Fits | Durable machines kept for years | Fast-aging tech you expect to replace | Owners who want ownership without a traditional loan |
Tax treatment differs between owning and leasing; ask your accountant before choosing.
Financing a loader, lift or trailer in Rowan County, NC
Specialty trade contractors made up 266 of Rowan County's 385 construction employers in 2023 (County Business Patterns 2023, U.S. Census Bureau). For a trade contractor, equipment is often the second-largest outlay after labor: a compact track loader, a trailer, a mini excavator, a scissor lift, or a pickup used for the work.
- Get a quote that lists make, model, year, hours or mileage and serial number
- Show the work the machine will do, such as signed contracts or a backlog
- Expect partners to check the age of used machines against the term requested
- Keep insurance on the equipment; partners usually require it
Our sector pages cover contractor cash flow in more detail. We do not arrange trucking or freight-hauling financing.
Chairs, imaging, ovens and coolers
Rowan County had 41 dentist offices and 37 physician offices with employees in 2023, and 210 restaurants and other eating places (County Business Patterns 2023). Dental chairs, imaging units, sterilizers, combi ovens, walk-in coolers and point-of-sale systems are all financeable. Specialized medical equipment holds value differently from general-purpose gear, so partners may ask for more about the practice than about the asset.
Pre-owned machines, delivery and installation
Used equipment can usually be financed, though partners may shorten the term or ask for an inspection or appraisal. Soft costs such as delivery, installation and training are sometimes rolled in and sometimes not; ask before you assume.
Fitting out a leased space is a different problem. Built-in improvements cannot be repossessed, so they are financed differently. Our post on leasehold financing for storefronts explains the split, and the downtown storefront guide covers review steps for older buildings.
Equipment loan versus a line of credit
A credit line can buy a small tool, but drawing it down for a long-life machine ties up the limit you need for payroll and supplies. Financing the machine separately keeps the line free. For projects bigger than the machine itself, such as a new location, a term loan may carry both.
Insurance, titles and the end of the term
Partners almost always require insurance on financed equipment, with the partner named as loss payee, for the life of the agreement. Titled assets such as a pickup or a trailer carry the partner's lien on the title until the last payment, and the title is released afterward.
At the end of the term, check three things: that the lien or UCC filing is released, that any lease buyout is handled as the lease says, and that insurance is updated. Keep the payoff letter with the equipment records.
